They all tasted the same and did not suit my not a wine wanker palate at all!!!!! Making wine is a rather esoteric art as we discovered as the winemaker explained. The well appointed van sports a state of the art bike trailer and after dismantling and loading the bikes at Cross Creek we drove a short distance past Lake Wairarapa to an “Urban Winery” in Greytown for a wine tasting. After the summit with its cute old/restored railway shelter it was a wonderful 9 km descent on the well maintained though narrow and rocky at times trail though by now I was beginning to get to terms with the e bike, the best settings to use and the miracles it was and wasn’t able to perform. The day’s cycling them took us up the Rimutaka rail trail including several tunnels, past numerous historical sights, through native bush and forest to the summit though I was too busy concentrating on staying upright to appreciate the the scenic elements of the ride, with lunch which we had chosen at the coffee break taken at the side of the trail. I was extremely cautious because the trail while not technical needed a mountain bike, and not being a confident mountain bike, the e bike added another dimension which probably took me the whole of day one as get used to. Adjusting to the e bike was quite a challenge in terms of how and when to use the gears as on a normal mountain bike together with the various power settings – Eco, Trail and Boost which blows ones socks off….potentially as well as Walk and Walk Assist when the bike actually runs away from you. The van took us via coffee, briefing and introductions, to the start of today’s ride at Upper Hutt initially riding along the side of the Hutt River to the foothills of the Rimutaka (or Remutaka – it seems both are acceptable) through the suburb of Maymorn. We met Sue and Brett our guides and were introduced to and practised on our e bikes while waiting for the other members of our party – Pam and Murray an older than us couple from Christchurch and Leanne an accountant from Manurewa on normal bikes. Long lunch and rest in our QT hotel room before a Malaysian meal together at an unpleasantly noisy Istana restaurant.ĭay one Wellington to Greytown About 40 km Greg and I enjoyed the Gallipoli expedition at Te Papa – the four times life sized soldiers were astonishing in their detail and the poignancy they portrayed.

After coffee together we spilt for the rest of the day in a windy and cool Wellington. We have gone over to the dark side! Yes we are doing this trip on e bikes partly because the other 4 Intrepids have made that transition and e bikes make the number of kms required to cycle each day more doable.Īuckland to Wellington Friday 5 February 2021Īfter an early start, we met the others at the Koru lounge at the airport before catching our 8.45Īm flight sharing a shuttle to our close to our cycling meeting place at Te Papa, hotel.
